Sitting at 7,220 feet above sea level in Laramie, Wyoming's athletic program represents one of the Mountain West Conference's most resilient programs, fielding 17 varsity sports across Division I-FBS since the university's founding in 1886. The Cowboys have built their identity on football success, including multiple bowl game appearances and a 1968 national championship team that featured Joe Rotolo's famous punt return in the Sugar Bowl. Wyoming's compact student-athlete community of approximately 500 competes within an enrollment of 10,813 total students, creating an intimate athletic culture across campus.

Football remains the flagship program, competing annually in the Mountain West Conference's Mountain Division with notable recent bowl eligibility streaks that have included the Famous Idaho Potatoes Bowl and other postseason appearances.
