ABOUT WESTERN CAROLINA

Nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina, Western Carolina University has fielded 16 varsity sports since its founding in 1889, serving an enrollment of 11,877 students across its Cullowhee campus. The Catamounts compete in the Southern Conference at the Football Championship Subdivision level, fielding programs in both football and basketball alongside Olympic sports including baseball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, golf, tennis, swimming and diving, lacrosse, and softball. This comprehensive athletic portfolio reflects the university's commitment to providing competitive opportunities across multiple seasons and skill levels.

Football and men's basketball anchor WCU's high-profile sports, with the football program competing on Saturday afternoons and the basketball team drawing fans throughout the winter months. Women's soccer, volleyball, and cross country programs have established competitive presences within Southern Conference play. The athletic department manages facilities across campus while maintaining standards expected of Division I-FCS institutions, with coaches and staff responsible for recruiting, developing, and supporting student-athletes across all 16 sports.
