ALABAMA STATE HORNETS FOOTBALL
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Alabama State University, founded in 1867 and located in Montgomery with an enrollment of 4,081 students, fields a 100-player football roster competing in NCAA Division I-FCS within the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Coach Eddie Robinson Jr. leads the Hornets program, which plays its home contests at the university's home venue and competes during the fall season. The program represents one of the historically significant Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in American higher education, drawing student-athletes to compete at the FCS level in the SWAC's competitive landscape.
Competing within the Southwestern Athletic Conference places Alabama State among regional rivals in one of the FCS's most established conferences for HBCU programs. The Hornets' roster of 100 players represents the depth needed to compete across the SWAC's demanding schedule while managing the academic mission of the university. Robinson Jr.'s leadership continues the football tradition at a university with deep roots in Alabama's educational history since its establishment in the post-Civil War era, positioning the program as part of the state's broader collegiate athletics landscape.
