ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA

Flagstaff's elevation of 7,000 feet creates a unique training environment that Northern Arizona has leveraged since the university's 1899 founding across its 16 varsity sports. The Lumberjacks compete in the Big Sky Conference at the FCS level, drawing from a student body of 28,194 to build competitive rosters in sports ranging from football and basketball to women's lacrosse and swimming & diving. NAU's mountain-altitude location has long been recognized as an advantage for distance runners, particularly within the men's and women's cross country programs that regularly compete for conference honors.

Northern Arizona fields balanced competition across both men's and women's athletics, with 16 varsity teams competing in traditional sports like baseball, soccer, and tennis alongside emerging programs like women's lacrosse. The football program anchors the athletic department as a Big Sky Conference fixture, while basketball programs on both sides compete within the same conference structure. Swimming & diving, volleyball, and golf offerings provide additional scholarship and participation opportunities for student-athletes representing the university in regional and national competitions.
