TEXAS RIO GRANDE VALLEY VAQUEROS FOOTBALL

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley emerged as a Division I-FCS program in 2013, making it one of the nation's youngest NCAA institutions competing in the Southland Conference from its Edinburg, Texas campus serving 35,812 students. The Vaqueros operate from a home venue in the Rio Grande Valley, a region with deep-rooted Mexican-American football culture that provides natural recruiting advantages. Since transitioning to collegiate athletics as part of the university's establishment, UTRGV has built its football program from inception, competing against established Southland institutions in a competitive FCS landscape.

The program represents the lower Rio Grande Valley's primary Division I football presence, giving the region's 1.3 million residents a collegiate team to support. Vaqueros football benefits from the university's rapid growth trajectory since 2013, when it was formed through the merger of the University of Texas at Brownsville and the University of Texas-Pan American. Operating within the Southland Conference structure, UTRGV competes in the fall season alongside programs with longer institutional histories, requiring the Vaqueros to develop competitive depth in recruiting and roster management despite their relatively recent D1 establishment.
